Each issue of the FREQ newsletter brings you an interview with a fascinating, inspiring, talented woman we think you should know more about. In our latest issue, we talk to pioneering interdisciplinary Latina scholar and activist, Dr. Jessica Pabón-Colón. Her recent book, Graffiti Grrlz: Performing Feminism in the Hip Hop Diaspora is a towering yet accessible work of scholarship on global feminism, urban culture, and the history of graffiti writing.

Read our full interview here; and learn about why celebrating women artists often starts with a process of recovery; why “feminism is a verb,” and how women write themselves into view.

FREQ #17: Ann Leckie Imagines A World Without Gender https://feministfrequency.com/2017/09/26/freq-17-ann-leckie-imagines-a-world-without-gender/ https://feministfrequency.com/2017/09/26/freq-17-ann-leckie-imagines-a-world-without-gender/#respond Tue, 26 Sep 2017 18:30:33 +0000 http://feministfrequency.com/?p=43225

Our latest issue of the FREQ newsletter features an interview with the fascinating Ann Leckie, who wrote her critically-acclaimed and best-selling debut novel, Ancillary Justice, when she was a stay-at-home mom well into her 40s without any published work to her name. The novel explores a fantastical universe through the eyes of a sentient AI ship called Justice of Toren, and it went on to win the hat trick of sci-fi literary achievement: Hugo, Nebula and Arthur C. Clarke Awards. Along with the sequels, Ancillary Sword and Ancillary Mercy, it takes place in a vast interplanetary empire where people are not distinguished by gender, and where the default pronoun is “she.” With her fourth book, Provenance, hitting shelves on September 26th, FREQ spoke to Leckie about the complexities of gender identity and language, in both the fantasy worlds we create and the real world where we live.

Each month, FREQ will bring you the latest news and updates from Feminist Frequency, as well as interviews with some of the most inspiring women in media, activism, and beyond. This month, we’re talking to Amber Galloway Gallego. An ASL interpreter by trade, her vibrant, impassioned translations of concerts by artists like Kendrick Lamar and The Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone viral more than once, and even earned her a spot in a sign language rap battle with Wiz Khalifa on Jimmy Kimmel Live. She’s translated that visibility into advocacy around the need for qualified ASL interpreters at music events, and equality and accessibility for deaf people in every aspect of life.

While mainstream comic books have often been criticized for their their hyper-idealized, objectifying and sometimes interchangeable drawings of women, the work of Sophie Campbell has often felt like an antidote: full of diverse, stylish and unmistakably distinct female characters. She made her name in the comics world with Wet Moon, a graphic novel series about a young queer woman growing up in a small Southern town, Shadoweyes, a sci-fi series with a shapeshifting female hero, and Glory, a relaunch of the ‘90s superheroine that traded in the character’s swimsuit model physique for a muscular female physicality rarely seen on the page.

Each month, FREQ will bring you the latest news and updates from Feminist Frequency, as well as interviews with some of the most inspiring women in media. Our latest issue features an interview with Teal Sherer.

Teal Sherer’s acting resume, which includes roles in film, theater and television, also boasts several special skills that few actors possess — including wheelies. An actor and producer in her own right, Sherer is an outspoken advocate for other actors with disabilities in the entertainment industry, where the roles offered to them are far and few between, and often defined by their disability rather than their talent. She’s also worked to lead the way, by creating the exact sort of nuanced role she wants to see in her comedy web series My Gimpy Life, which takes a lightly fictionalized look at her own experiences with living and working in Hollywood as a person in a wheelchair. FREQ talked to Sherer about the making of My Gimpy Life, “inspiration porn” and how Hollywood needs to change its approach to disability.
